This is the start of the secondary element on causation - the key second order concept we will be looking at this year. We have seen how William gained power, we now have to look at how he was able to maintain his grip on power, and indeed strengthen it in the light of the challenges he faced. The first of these challenges was posed by rebellions, both initially from disgruntled Saxons with Danish support, and then in 1075 from his own earls. This section incorporates a really challenging section asking you to take on the role of one of Hereward the Wake's men, and translate the runes that would guide his men safely through the fens surrounding the island fortress of Ely that Hereward was using as his base. You should work through the activities in order.
